Isabeau D'Arbanville
Week 3

It seems like an age since I decorated the kitchen of the Leawater's new house, last week I couldn't wait for the brief for week 3 to be posted...then I found out we had a 2 week deadline - which was fantastic in terms of being really able to spend some time and consideration on it :)

Here is the brief:

Using the information about the family create a Master Bedroom for Foster and Cricket Leawater (Mom and Dad) and their Teen son Garrett and daughter Pearl (school age child).

When you open the door to your office you see a brilliant pink envelope in the middle of your desk. You notice the return address is Rockwell Home Location Service. "Hmm ... must be Esther Rockell" you say to yourself as you grab a cup of coffee before opening the envelope. Inside are two letters.

My my your team sure has been busy. Mrs Leawater was very happy with the pictures of her new kitchen design and tells me he can't wait to serve her first meal in her new kitchen and dining area. I am enclosing this note from the family with some additional requests for the bedrooms and baths.

Have a Fabulous Day!

Thank you,

Esther Rockwell

The second letter is in a flowing hand on light lavender stationary which is scented in a lovely lilac scent. Closing your eyes you breathe in the soothing aroma before reading the note.

Hello, We have looked over the plans for the house and the kitchen designs. Wow, you sure are a talented group of designers!

We are looking forward to coming home soon but have a few more stops on our trip. Then we will be ready to move into our new home. Just a quick note to let you know what we would like in the way of sleeping quarters and bathrooms. My husband Foster loves the outdoors and is partial to yellow. I love a tranquil lilac with hints of greens to remind me of my garden.

My son Garrett also loves the outdoors and likes to go jogging in the morning before school. Music is important to him and he is a huge fan of the Rock group 'Pantz on Fire'. He is not sure yet if he will follow a career in sports of music. His favorite color is brown but does not want his room to be too dark. My daughter, Pearl loves to tinker with things. She has taken apart every toy in the house and successfully put it back together again. She also likes going on field trips with her class. She has brought home quite a few interesting 'treasures'. She likes using the internet and library books to learn all about her finds. Her favorite color is purple.

My husband and I would love to have a bath of our own with two sinks. The children can share a bath. An additional half bath would be nice for a guest bathroom.

Thank you again for all your hard work. Looking forward to your new designs.

Mrs. Leawater

Key points:

*Read the history of the challenge in the first post.
*Review the note from Mrs Leawater to get an idea of what the family would like.
*Create a color palette for bedrooms and baths.
*Master bedroom (lilac/yellow/green accents)
*Teen boy bedroom (likes brown/active/loves Rock music)
*Girl Child (likes purple/adventure/exploring/tinkering/collecting)
*Master Bath for parents.
*Shared bath for children.
*Half bath for guests.
**Laundry room optional if you have ambitions you may add this now.

My starting point here was to look at the floor plan of the second floor and see how it compared with Mrs Leawater's request for a Master Bathroom. It's something I hadn't included originally - I had also moved the staircase whilst decorating the kitchen and dining areas - so the upstairs required a little bit of remodelling.

I moved some walls and made all the rooms slightly larger and managed to fit in a Master Bathroom, and give Garrett & Pearl much larger bedrooms.

One I'd done this I set about choosing wallpapers for all the rooms. I wanted floral themes in all the bedrooms, in lilacs, yellows and greens so I chose some beautiful, traditional wallpapers.

THE MASTER BEDROOM

For the bedroom suite I chose furniture that was handmade, originally made in teak, which I white washed and added some enamelled, mint green handles. Three of the walls were painted in lilac and the accent wall (behind the bed) has a stunning floral print paper which has lilac and yellow petals on a fresh, clean, white background. I used this same print for the bedspread and then accented the soft furnishings with mint green throws and pillows and a swag above the bed. Mrs Leawater's favourite colour is Lilac but she also likes green as it reminds her of her beloved garden.

The Master Bathroom is accessed via a lovely archway (to Paradise) and contines the Lilac and Mint theme in the walls and tiles and the floral theme in the curtains and swags. We found the most incredible bathroom from CashCraft at TSR, it's old world charm to it's very extreme and it suits the theme of the Master Suite perfectly - Old World, country charm, with a hint of the aspirational.

GARRETT'S BEDROOM

I didn't want poor Garrett to be overwhelmed in a forest of florals and fauna's, but I also didn't want his bedroom to seem completely alien to the rest of the house. I found a pretty leaf print which we coloured in bright greens and yellows. Garrett is a teenager so we wanted to choose furniture that was age appropriate. It's almost the only modern furniture in the house, but, because of it's natural wood finish, it certainly doesn't look out of place. The rooms are all spacious, so we gave Garrett a TV and a small settee, so he can spend time alone in his room or invite friends around. He also has a desk and bookshelf to help with his studies.

PEARL'S BEDROOM

Pearl's favourite colour is purple, which we felt was too deep a colour for a child's room, but we took the lilac and mint green theme and kicked it up a notch to give her room a fun and funky look that she will, hopefully, enjoy into her teens. The wallpaper continues the floral them of the other bedrooms but is a deeper and richer colour. Pearl's room is fairly long and thin, so we zoned it, giving her a study and social area - including a desk, bookshelves and a sectional sofa - and a sleeping area with her bed, dresser and mirror. Pearl likes collecting things so we included plenty of surfaces for her to display her objects of interest.

THE BATHROOMS

As previously mentioned, the Master Bathroom was modelled by CashCraft over at TSR, we used the same sink in the main bathroom  but the colour scheme is in deeper greens and we included a large walk-in shower - for those moments when you're late for school and don't have time for a long lingering soak in the tub.

GUEST SUITE

In the original floorplan (for downstairs) there was a combined study, which we intended could incorporate a guest bedroom. However, when we came to furnish this room, we felt it wasn't in keeping with the rest of the house, so we moved some of the walls around a touch and found we had enough room to make a seperate Guest Room. It's a small, double bedroom but is comfortably furnished with a pretty lilac, yellow and green floral patterned wallpaper and bedspread. The furniture is white and a door leads to the downstairs shower, bath and laundry room - which is decorated with bright, sunflower yellow tiles.

THE STUDY

This is one of my favourite rooms in the Leawater property. It's a quiet room that gets the evening sun and it has a desk, computer and bookshelves but is also a place to read, as it has a settee which looks into the main livingroom - the study is accessed via an archway so is not 'closed off' from the rest of the house. And anyone who is sitting, reading, or listening to music will be able to see the comings and goings of the household....

I look forward to hearing what you all think, and hope you'll tune in for the next installment - which is to finish the living areas...
